AI Has Quietly Moved Into the Home
When people hear “AI,” many still think first of chatbots such as ChatGPT or the AI features inside a smartphone.
But look around the home.
There is a refrigerator, a washing machine, an oven, an air conditioner and perhaps a robot vacuum. These used to be machines that waited for people to press buttons and choose settings. Now, more of them can sense what is happening around them, recognize patterns and adjust what they do.
This is not happening at only one or two companies. Samsung and LG in Korea, GE Appliances in the United States, Siemens in Germany, and Haier and Roborock in China are all pushing appliances in a similar direction.
AI has quietly moved out of the computer screen and into the home.
1. Refrigerators Are Starting to See What Is Inside
A refrigerator once had a simple job: keep food cold.
AI is changing that role. Samsung’s 2026 Bespoke AI Refrigerator Family Hub uses an upgraded AI Vision system built with Google Gemini to recognize a wider range of foods and help manage what is stored inside. We used to open the refrigerator and ask:
“What do I have in here?”
Now the refrigerator is beginning to answer that question first.
2. Washing Machines and Air Conditioners Are Reading the Situation
The same change is happening in laundry and climate control.
Haier’s 2026 Seeker washing machine combines visual sensing with voice recognition. In one example presented by the company, a user can put clothes into the washer and say that they have just returned from a hospital; the system interprets the context and selects a deep-sterilization cycle. The Seeker air conditioner goes a step further by tracking a person’s position and directing airflow toward that user when asked. The significance is not simply that an appliance has another automated setting. The larger shift is that the machine is trying to understand context rather than merely execute a fixed command.
Home appliances are slowly changing from machines that wait for instructions into machines that try to understand the situation.
3. Ovens Are Beginning to Recognize Food
AI is also changing cooking.
GE Appliances says selected 2026 GE Profile, Café and Monogram wall ovens use CookCam AI to recognize what is being cooked and recommend an appropriate Precision Cooking mode. People have always asked:
“What temperature should I use?”
“How much longer should I cook this?”
Now the oven is starting to participate in those decisions.
4. Robot Vacuums Can See the Home
Robot vacuums make the change especially visible.
Modern models can use cameras and other sensors to identify obstacles, map rooms and plan cleaning routes. Roborock, for example, provides obstacle-recognition features on selected models and allows users to view recognized obstacle images in the app; some camera-equipped models also support remote viewing. That makes cleaning more convenient.
But it also introduces a very different question:

5. When a Helpful Camera Becomes a Security Risk
A camera on a robot vacuum can help identify objects and, on some models, let owners check their home remotely.
That sounds useful. But the same capability creates a cybersecurity risk if the device, account or remote-access system is compromised.
In 2024, security researchers Dennis Giese and Braelynn Luedtke disclosed vulnerabilities affecting some Ecovacs robots. TechCrunch reported that the researchers found ways attackers could abuse Bluetooth-related weaknesses and then remotely access cameras and microphones. TechCrunch Ecovacs report.
Australia’s ABC News then tested the issue with security researchers. They were able to access an Ecovacs Deebot X2 and watch a person inside a building through the robot’s camera from outside. Days later, ABC reported separate incidents in several U.S. cities in which Ecovacs Deebot X2 robots were remotely controlled by outsiders. In some cases, attackers moved the robot or used its speaker. None of this means every robot vacuum is unsafe or that anyone can simply look through any home camera.
But one lesson is difficult to ignore:
The moment we give AI a pair of eyes inside our homes, cybersecurity becomes part of the appliance itself.
6. What Is the AI in Your Home Learning?
Smarter appliances need information.
A refrigerator may identify food. A washing machine may analyze laundry. An air conditioner may sense where a person is. A robot vacuum may map rooms, identify objects and—on some models—use cameras and microphones.
ABC News reported in 2024 that Ecovacs had programs in which, with user consent, images, video and audio collected by some robot vacuums could be used for product improvement and AI model training. ABC robot vacuum data.
That means the question for an AI appliance should no longer be only:
“How smart is this product?”
We also need to ask:
“What does it know about me?”
And:
“Where does that information go?”
7. Security Is Now a Feature
As AI appliances become more connected, security should be treated as part of product quality—not as an afterthought.
Before buying or enabling advanced features, users should check when cameras and microphones operate, whether remote access can be disabled, whether two-step verification is available, how long security updates are promised, and where video, audio and mapping data are stored.

9. Are the AI in the Home and the AI in the Car Starting to Connect?
There is another important change underway.
Until recently, the AI in a refrigerator, the AI in a smartphone and the AI in a car mostly developed inside separate product worlds.
Now companies are beginning to connect those worlds.
Samsung and Hyundai Motor Group have connected SmartThings with Hyundai and Kia connected-car services. Samsung says Home-to-Car service launched in September 2025, followed by Car-to-Home in March 2026. A driver could, for example, turn on the home air conditioner before arriving.
This is still not the same as one AI understanding a person’s entire day and autonomously managing every device. Today, it is closer to platforms linking separate products and services.
But the direction is clear: AI systems that used to operate separately are beginning to connect.
And as the number of connected devices grows, one compromised account or platform could potentially affect a wider part of a person’s digital life. Convenience and security are growing together.

Are AI home appliances really using artificial intelligence?
Some are. Depending on the product, AI may be used for image recognition, pattern analysis, voice understanding, sensor interpretation or automated recommendations. Can someone hack a robot vacuum camera?
