Had too much to drink last night?
In Korea, the answer might be a steaming bowl of haejangguk — hangover soup.

The soup is hot.
It’s spicy.
And what comes next?

Korea’s Hangover Culture
“Haejang” means easing a hangover, and Korea has built an entire food culture around it.
Haejangguk comes in many forms, including beef-broth soups, bean-sprout soups and spicy pork-bone soups.
Some versions contain seonji — coagulated beef blood.
Yes, blood.
And at some restaurants, fresh chili peppers and spicy seasonings come alongside the already-hot soup.
Hot soup.
Spicy broth.
Fresh chili.
Welcome to Korea.
Culture Shock
For Koreans, it’s breakfast after a long night.
For a first-time visitor?
